Immediate implantology: your fixed prosthesis in less than 12 hours

Surely by now you have heard the term: immediate implantology more than once. Even if you are not familiar with this type of treatment, the enormous progress made by this new dental technique has made immediate implantology one of the most talked-about topics.

n today's post we are going to tell you what this new immediate implantology technique consists of; what aspects you should bear in mind; in which cases we can opt for this type of treatment and, finally, we will explain the advantages offered by immediate vs. conventional implantology.

Immediate implant treatment

Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, offering alternatives that a short time ago would have been very difficult to carry out. We are not only talking about technique, but also about materials, sizes, thickness, finishes... Each patient is different, as is each smile, which has led prosthetic companies to design an infinite number of proposals, the latest of which would be immediate load implants.

This type of fixed prosthesis meets a new market demand. Thanks to them, a good alternative is offered to all those people who, for various reasons, do not want to wait between three and six months to complete their smile. In fact, although it may seem like science fiction, this new technique makes it possible to obtain a perfect smile in a single session, including possible extractions.

How does an immediate load implant work?

Implants, as a whole, are intended to replace one or more missing teeth. The prostheses are fixed on the implants integrated into the bone, which are attached by means of a surgical intervention. These screws are made of biocompatible material, which means that the body accepts them as its own. Consequently, it is the bone itself that integrates the implants, accepting them and embracing them tightly, as if they were the root of a natural tooth.

Immediate load implants, like conventional implants, can be single implants, bridges or full-arch implants. In the first case, each tooth is attached to its own implant. In the second case, it will depend on each situation, and between 1 and 2 implants can be used. In the third case, the complete prosthesis is supported by four or six attachment points, known commercially as All on Four or All on Six, respectively.

The process for the placement of immediately loaded implants is as follows: if there are any, the damaged teeth and/or possible roots are extracted. Then, using the hollows (sockets) left by the natural teeth, the implants are placed by drilling into the bone. The stitches are stitched and the temporary fixed prosthesis, made of resin, is screwed in place.

Depending on the case, this temporary prosthesis can be fitted during the same operation, but it may also be necessary to wait a few hours. However, from this point onwards, the patient will be able to lead a normal life: eating, smiling, drinking, talking... So they will come out of the operation with a perfectly finished smile.

After three months, the bone will have osseointegrated the implants, so it will be the perfect moment to change the resin prosthesis for a definitive porcelain one, concluding the treatment at this point.

What aspects should we bear in mind?

In order to guarantee the patient's comfort, it is usual to opt for conscious sedation during the intervention, especially when we are talking about a complete smile. The presence of an anaesthetist is essential in this respect. The patient remains awake at all times, but is calm and pain-free.

As with conventional implants, a number of medical requirements must be met in order to undergo treatment. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes are discouraged. Smoking also comes into play in this respect, as it could lead to infections during the healing process. In any case, before any intervention is considered, the dentist will carry out an examination to check the patient's general state of health.

Another aspect to bear in mind is that immediate load implants are just as effective and safe as conventional implants. Around 97% of cases are effective. This means that if we follow our dentist's instructions, we will be able to enjoy our new smile for the rest of our lives.

What are the benefits compared to conventional implants?

Immediate load implants allow us to recover the functionality of our teeth, chewing, phonation and, above all, aesthetics in less than 24 hours.

In a single session we will have our perfect smile, without the need to visit the dentist several times. This allows us greater freedom and discretion,

Self-esteem also plays a crucial role in this aspect, as the patient sees the change immediately, without having to spend time without teeth while the postoperative recovery takes place.
